On May 5, 2026, the Champaign City Council approved CB 2026-056, establishing a local contractor licensing program designed to help keep homes and businesses safe. This program ensures that electricians working in the community have appropriate training and knowledge, reducing the risk of costly installation errors and helping projects move forward more efficiently by minimizing the need for reinspection. Overall, the licensing requirement protects residents, promotes quality workmanship, and supports safe, reliable electrical work.

To become licensed, contractors must demonstrate relevant work experience, pass a nationally recognized examination administered by the International Code Council, and provide payment of $180 for new registrations or $135 for renewals to the City of Champaign Building Safety Division. Three license classifications are available based on qualifications: Unrestricted Master Electrician, Restricted Residential Electrician, and Restricted Maintenance Electrician.
